The Las Vegas Hot Spots Insider Guide

Coolest Dessert in the Desert
TOP NEW VEGAS HOT SPOT FOR 2010

Serendipity 3

Outside Caesar's Palace
next to walkway to Bellagio

Serendipity 3

Serendipity is defined as "the art of making happy discoveries," so it's appropriate that the newest dining gem at Caesars Palace is New York City's beloved Serendipity 3. This cheerful restaurant offers a one-of-a-kind dining experience adjacent to the resort's iconic fountains at the corner of Flamingo Road and the Las Vegas Strip.  Serendipity 3 is a great choice for lunch or dinner as well as dessert, offering colossal burgers and dogs, overstuffed sandwiches and pastas piled high. Try the One-N-Only Las Vegas Buffet Sandwich, which combines tastes of Italy, Japan, France, Mexico and the United States – all on the same bun. The Summer Bries is a turkey sandwich, served open-faced on a raisin pumpernickel bun with apples, cranberry mayo and brie. Similar creative dishes and playful combinations can be found throughout the menu.  Perhaps the best-known treat you'll find at Serendipity 3 is the Frrrozen Hot Chocolate, an indulgent concoction blending 20 different kinds of chocolate into an icy, rich cocoa flavor. Other desserts are just as decadent, such as the Forbidden Broadway Sundae, which tops chocolate blackout cake with ice cream, hot fudge and whipped cream.  For a truly over-the-top dessert, there's the Golden Opulence Sundae. Available for $1,000, this is the Guiness World Record holder for "most expensive dessert." It's five scoops of Tahitian vanilla ice cream, rare chocolates made from Venezuelan cocoa beans, exotic fruits and 23-karat edible gold leaf.  Serendipity offers take-out as well as a full bar with specialty cocktails like the Candy Cotton Martini.

S'mores at N9NE Steakhouse

The Palms Resort and Casino,
4321 W. Flamingo Road, Las Vegas

Summer camp is a tradition unfamiliar to the majority of the population under 30, but for anyone who's camped at Lake Lostinnocence or spent time in the Girl Scouts, a powerful memory is the s'more, a fireside classic constructed of melted marshmallow, chocolate, and graham crackers. Since 1927 when the Girl Scouts printed the recipe in their handbook, young campers have been toasting, smushing, munching, and asking for more. N9NE Steakhouse at the Palms is letting diners make their own s'mores right at the table, browning marshmallows over flaming pots, and building the sweet, gooey delicacy to their individual tastes. Sweet and gooey, this dessert is an engaging departure from the oh-so-ordinary menu of crème brulee, cheesecake, and chocolate mousse. Humor columnist Dave Barry recently recounted his first experiences with s'mores, saying "this is when I observed a fundamental difference between boys and girls: How girls make s'mores -- 1) Place Hershey's bars on graham crackers. 2) Toast marshmallows. 3) Place toasted marshmallow on Hershey's bar to melt chocolate. How boys make s'mores -- 1) Eat Hershey's bar. 2) Eat marshmallows. 3) Throw graham crackers at other boys."
