Gamblers Book Shop
Don’t come here looking for advice on how much to bank, when to hold, fold and when to call it quits in a game. Former journalist turned bookseller Howard Schwartz doesn’t know and can’t tell you. But he’ll tell you what one author says and how another disagrees and he’ll tell you everything you ever wanted to know about Benny Binion, Bugsy Seigel and the boys who made this town. He’ll give you the lowdown on the local madams and the tough lessons imparted by whales and guppies alike. The shop on 11th and Charleston is barely visible to the unenlightened, but inside is a treasure chest of gambler’s wisdom, both on the shelf and piled in boxes in the back where the rare and out of print stuff sits. It’s the haunt of writers and those seeking secrets. Bruce Dern, Nora Ephron and Nick Paleggi all drop in for a browse now and then. And for those who can’t, a catalogue of titles is available on line. The Gambler’s Book Shop since 1964, 630 South 11th Street, 702-382-7555. www.gamblersbook.com.
