Gilley's Saloon
Sheesh. Can it really be 25 years since Bud and Sissy (John Travolta and Debra Winger) rode, drank and danced up a storm at the original Gilley's in Texas in the seminal movie "Urban Cowboy"? A (gulp) generation later, the spirit of those times lives on at the only country bar on the Las Vegas Strip. Sure, fads come and go (and come again), but the Vegas Gilley's, located inside the New Frontier Hotel and Casino, is as hot as ever, drawing a very eclectic crowd (real cowboys, urban cowboys, college students, locals and visitors). This is because: A. It manages to be laid back and rowdy at the same time; B. It features a huge dance floor, lots of wood and the obligatory mechanical bull; and C. there's live music Thursdays through Saturdays, along with plenty of all-you-can-drink beer specials. Oh, and at Gilley's, the bull riding contests feature women in bikinis (midnight weekends, with cash and prizes). Really, how can you NOT like a place that advertises "dirty girls, cold beer and mud wrestling." Gilley's, like all things Texas, features everything supersized: heaping barbecue dinners (last seatings are at 9 p.m.), people wearing belt buckles the size of dinner plates, and large portions of fun, served nightly. And that's no "urban" myth. 3120 Las Vegas Blvd. South. 702 794-8200.
