This is the story of
the Godfather, along with two guys that don’t get out much –
Dwight and Steve. Dwight was visiting Las Vegas for the first time in five
years (he lives in Orange County, California), and Steve, a local, has been
working way too many hours. Given the situation, it was time for a night
entitled “behind the velvet rope,” Las Vegas slang for “VIP
access – no lines, no cover charges.” Of course the value of
velvet rope services to the lounges and nightclubs is quite obvious. But
for us, with cover charges typically $20 at each venue, a party of three
visiting three nightclubs means an investment of $180 – and that’s
before any food and drink. Moreover, lines at the best hot spots in Las
Vegas are two to three hours on a Friday or Saturday. It doesn’t take
a card counter to do the math…how many clubs can you visit if you
wait two hours at each to get in?
We
kicked off our evening at a VegasHotSpot that is the Godfather’s
favorite venue, the House of Blues Foundation Room (“Best Private
Club”) atop Mandalay Bay. The crowd is mid-thirties and up, the
ambience is classic House of Blues, and the crush is fairly light before
10pm. The Foundation Room is a private, “members only” venue.
So I hooked up with Dwight and Steve about 8pm on a Friday night, and
we toasted drinks and discussed the night’s activities. Three VegasHotSpots
in six hours, starting with the Foundation Room. The Godfather enjoyed
a Cuban cigar and mapped out an action plan. At 9pm our limo arrived at
Mandalay Bay and the driver called Dwight on his mobile phone. We waved
the Foundation Room goodbye and walked out front to catch the limo to
our second venue – the infamous ghostbar on the 56th floor of the
Palms Casino Resort.
We cruise by the
two-hour wait, skirt the $20 cover charge, and
head up the elevator. Very cool. As always, the place is jumping. Mostly
your mid-twenties, early-thirties crowd, and certainly louder and more
energetic than most ultra-lounges. This is a great place to “people
watch”, and is frequented by musicians, actors, and entertainment
types. The Maloof family owns the Palms and the Sacramento Kings NBA franchise,
so all-star sports celebrity sightings are a daily occurrence. The outdoor
deck with its see-through floor provides the most breath-taking panorama
of the Strip you can get if you’re not in a helicopter. After an
hour of admiring the view…if you know what I mean…we head
back downstairs for our next stop – Rain in the Desert nightclub
(“Hottest Dance Club in Town”).
This
is a Godfather favorite. Yes, it’s loud, but where can you see a
dance stage surrounded by a river, with flames shooting out of the ceiling.
We are again on the VIP list, so we get our wristbands and head to the
second level VIP area. The first floor is happening, and the dance floor
is packed. Rain has a tremendous sound system, and the special effects
are world class. The VIP level is pretty quiet, maybe 20 people wandering
around and observing the pandemonium on the first floor. After two hours
of mingling and schmoozing, we are ready for the last stop of the evening.
Back to the
limo, then over to the Bellagio for the best after hours club in Las Vegas
– Light (“Best Bar for High Rollers”). We are on the
VIP list at Light and ready to rock. The place is jumping, so much so,
that we cannot get a booth. Light has “bottle service,” which
means you can get a booth provided you buy a bottle. The other upside
is that you get a “server” all night. She will ensure that
your experience is comfortable and personalized. Entry price is about
$400 for a bottle of vodka, which includes glasses, ice, mixers, and tip
for the server. Well worth the investment. Without a booth, we decide
to cruise the scene and check out the dance floor. There are go-go dancers
on platforms, the music is booming – we appear to be at party central
for 2am on a Friday late night. This was not our last stop of the evening,
however, it is the last one the Godfather can discuss…if you know
what I mean.
Overall,
an excellent night behind the velvet rope. VegasHotSpots will be starting
an “Ultimate VegasHotSpots Experience” offering in the near
future. It will feature VIP entrance to the hottest spots in Las Vegas.
And on occasion, the Godfather will even host it. Entry pricing is $250
per person, and based on your exact requirements, there is no price ceiling.
