The Godfather
We Will Rock You, the new theatrical production, is a great reason to visit the Paris Hotel and Casino. Not that anyone every needed an excuse to visit one of the most glamorous hotel/casinos on the Strip. I almost feel bad rating this show a B+ because it was only in “preview” and the lone weaknesses were some corny portions of the story and a few singing voices that could have been stronger. That stated, let’s take a look at the details.

The demographic that will enjoy We Will Rock You is decidedly “baby boomer”. Queen, of course, were rock icons back in the 70s and 80s. Due to certain off color jokes, I don’t recommend this for the under 18 crowd. The humor does liven up the production, and everyone knows the Godfather is not a prude.

These production shows seem to have a formula. There is typically a fantasy type storyline, a great live band, a beautiful cast, and a big three song finale. In this case, we have fourteen scenes that climax with “We Will Rock You”, “We Are the Champions”, and “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Most of the cast actually came from New York City, and what a good looking set of young men and women. We saw the understudy for the male lead (Galileo), and he was somewhere between Johnny Rotten and David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust. Surprisingly enough, I believe the two best voices belonged to second tier characters Brit and Oz.

We Will Rock You features all of the big Queen hits, along with a handful of less well known, but fantastic nonetheless, tunes. The action is pretty non-stop, so don’t worry about falling asleep. If nothing else, this production may set a new high on the “spectacle” barometer. The lighting and sound is nearly flawless. Great production work and attention to detail. And before I forget, the live backing bands is probably one of the best in Las Vegas. Phenomenal musicians.

Le Theatre Des Arts is probably not the Godfather’s favorite theater. The rows are looooooooooooong, and if you are in the middle of the row, congratulations on the seat - but good luck getting out of the theater. The up side is that the theater is fairly small so you can’t get a bad seat. Overall, a unique and well stage performance, and a welcome addition to the Las Vegas entertainment scene.
