The Godfather
Recording artist Pink opened her North American concert tour at George Maloof's Rain Nightclub inside the Palms May 5. And Rain it did, as Pink absolutely rocked the nightclub! Many of the fans were interested to see if Pink's unique musical style would translate during a live show, and they were not disappointed. The line was 300 deep by 7:00 pm when the doors opened, and for the record, the concert was a sell out. It was an all ages show, so there was an interesting mix of pink-haired high school kids, twenty something concert chic regulars,
and VIPs. The Godfather saw Kevin Dubois of Quiet Riot run in. Seems like Kevin is everywhere. When last seen, he joined the "Voices of Rock" onstage at the House of Blues a few months back. Kevin is a regular at the athletic club and never seems to age. For those not familiar with Rain, it is one of three nightclubs at the Palms, and by far the most spacious. The other two are the Ghost Bar and Skin, which just opened. Sunday night, there were two lines to get in - general admission for the floor level, and VIP for the second level and Rain Rooms. Oh yes, the Rain Rooms. VIP suites that overlook the stage, these are the ultimate in comfort and stylishness. The Godfather was in Rain Room #5, along with a group of Godfatherly friends that cannot be mentioned by name. The opening act was the 2002 version of the Go-Gos. Coincidentally, the intermission music was a Go-Gos album. By the time Pink hit the stage at 9:00 pm, the excitement had built to a fever pitch. Down on the floor level, people crushed up against the stage, and chanted, Pink, Pink, Pink!". Pink opened with her number one smash, "Get this Party Started", and the crowd absolutely erupted. The set list included all of her music, and the encore finished up with "Don't Let me Get me". The VIP area was fairly crowded for a Sunday night, however this was Pink's first live concert, and the hype around the show probably helped to sell it out.

The show finished up around 10:30 pm, and the Godfather's posse headed over to the Ghost Bar for the "after party". How is it we start with eight people in the Rain Room, and by night's end, there are more like twenty? Anyway, the big guy took us the back way to the Ghost Bar elevator, flashed his VIP card, and we were upstairs. Full house amigos! Pink was already in the "side room", and the party was in full swing. The Ghost Bar reminds me of a yuppie Shark Club. Remember that Las Vegas nightclub back in the 70s? All nine planets were represented on a nightly basis. There were tall ones, short ones, tattooed ones, strippers, and the requisite twenty somethings with spiked hair and oversized black glasses. Even owner George Maloof dropped by to check out the happening. In a word, outstanding! You can't pay for this type of entertainment!
