The Godfather
November 22, 2004 - Big Bad Voodoo Daddy (www.bbvd.com) is one of the Godfather's all-time favorite bands, so it was no surprise to find him hosting 150 of his friends and business associates for the show November 11. As an added bonus, Orange County rockers WaxApples (www.waxapples.com) were the opening act, featuring Jamie and Brian Coakley (formerly of the Cadillac Tramps).

High above the House of Blues Concert Hall is one of the coolest and swankest concert venues in Las Vegas - the OBA. This private club may be a bit further away from the stage, however it features VIP Booths, one row of reserved seats, and it's own bar service. Truth is, most people are not aware that the OBA exists.

Big Bad Voodoo Daddy consists of Karl and Andy on the saxophone, Glen on the trumpet, Scotty on lead vocals, Kurt on the drums, Dirk on the bass, and Josh on the piano. Without a doubt, BBVD is one of the great performance bands. Even if you don't find their rocking retro swing sound attractive, you have to give them props for the amazing stage show. This year, BBVD has two new CDs: a live greatest hits album, and a Christmas CD titled, "Everything You Want for Christmas". As always, BBVD put on a highly dynamic stage show, and the crowd was up on their feet and dancing.

The WaxApples opened the evening with their version of high energy, guitar-filled excitement that can best be described as "voodoo rock." Brian Coakley, formerly of the Cadillac Tramps, fronts the band on guitar, along with his wife Jamie on vocals. As my friend Eric once said, "she's a real vixen." They are accompanied by Marcus on bass, Matt on sax, and James on the drums. The WaxApples were the perfect complement to BBVD, with an eclectic stage performance and an electric sound.

BBVD eventually showed up at the Foundation Room, however the WaxApples were gracious enough to swing by the OBA after their show. The Godfather introduced lead guitarist Brian Coakley to his friends in the VIP Booths. Unlike many of my rock star friends, who have to be dragged screaming and kicking to meet their fans, the WaxApples were more then happy to hang out and discuss the show with their fans. Their new CD is available at www. Waxapples.com.

Those are the logistics, now to the juice. The crowd consisted of executives from most of the major casinos, along with some interesting new folks. The inhabitants of one VIP Booth may have enjoyed the festivities a bit too much. In VIP Booth #3 were members of Groove Kitty, the girl band that just finished a one year run at the MGM Grand. RecruitingNevada President Doug Geinzer was in the house, as was sponsor BusinessObjects. Thanks to Russell Jones and the House of Blues for their tremendous hospitality!
